[03:30] <@Yaijinden> Even after she's married to the Baron, they end up meeting in secret for months, going at it like bunnies whenever there's a chance... and are inevitably discovered by servants, who spoil a lot of things.
[03:31] <@Yaijinden> Then, because the Baron is absolutely f[BLEEP]king pissed that someone he looked at as a son is rodgering his WIFE, they run and spend a year making an agonizing, dirty living in a forest.
[03:32] <@Yaijinden> Eventually, the potion wears off, and some hermit screams at them and chases them out; Iseult, utterly depressed, decides to return to the Baron and humble herself. Tristan dejectedly starts heading elsewhere, because he sure can't go back to the Baron's right now.
[03:34] <@Yaijinden> However, being the hero that he is, Tristan eventually makes friends with some other young knight and gets sucked into a war, in which he kicks ass and takes names. Again, he becomes close with the local lord and his son; eventually, his friend starts seriously suggesting that Tristan marry his sister (also coincidentally named Iseult), and while Tristan plays along half-heartedly, he is still more or less pining for _his_ Iseult the whole time.

Loyal, pretty, good with traditional wymyn skills, kind-hearted in general... but she isn't HIS Iseult. HIS Iseult is in another castle, and Iseult in another castle is pining for him just as hard.

[03:41] <@Yaijinden> Iseult local is... disappointed by this news, very much, but she promises to abide his being mind-numbingly depressed because she can't really MAKE him stop feeling for this other woman.
[03:43] <@Yaijinden> Thus follows a stretch of time where the two ill-fated lovers are incredibly and completely miserable. The potion was temporary, but the memories of their overriding passion are not-- and they are loathe to give that connection up, both preferring that if they're going to suffer then they know they're suffering together.
[03:47] <@Yaijinden> Eventually, Iseult starts taking sick with sadness. Messengers convey this to the Distant Castle at her behest; the messengers cross paths with another group saying that Tristan has been struck down by some foe, and only Iseult the Emo's magic can save him-- if she still lives.
[03:48] <@Yaijinden> The Baron, out of compassion for a son he still loves, allows Iseult the chance to go get him. The message from Tristan says, "If she's alive and on her way, please fly white sails; if she isn't, please fly black." She sets off in a rush.
[03:50] <@Yaijinden> Tristan, meanwhile, is languishing feverishly in a bed, while Iseult the Shunned Wife is watching over him like a good respectable wife does in that day and age. She catches sight of the ships and says, "Tristan, the Baron comes!" He replies, hoarsely, "What sails are they flying?"
[03:51] <@Yaijinden> And out of years of repressed anger and hate, she takes a step of revenge and says, "Black."
[03:52] <@Yaijinden> Tristan hears this, nods, laments, and lets his crushing sadness finish the job of killing him... and when Iseult the Sad comes up and discovers, Iseult the Shunned confesses what she said, broken-hearted; Iseult the Sad nods, smiles sadly, and lays on top of Tristan and lets herself die of depression.

[03:56] <@Yaijinden> In the face of this weakening devotion, people were beginning to look for other ways... but there was madness and insanity there. If you weren't Christian, you were a heretic or a blasphemer, and generally bereift of the support of your community...

[03:57] <@Yaijinden> A way to relate to God... through the medium of a person.
[03:59] <@Yaijinden> In the beginning, this "romantic love" was inspiration only. To dedicate yourself to another this way was not to put the burdens of expectation that we commonly saddle people with nowadays... because if you are relating to God through a person, you are sure as s[BLEEP]t not relating to the person.
[04:01] <@Yaijinden> The best example of romantic love that comes to mind is the story of Parsifal, one of the knights of Arthur. He fought a war on behalf of a woman who could not fight it herself; she offered him strength and inspiration, he offered her direction and energy.
