[08:04] <Springfield> Today's dish is what's called Three Sisters Soup.
[08:08] <Queen Bonnie> [Chiyoko's] Doesn't sound bad, either.
[08:08] <Springfield> It was created long ago as product of a companion planting technique, where three different crops were planted together that actively complemented and supported each other as they grew.
[08:09] <Springfield> Those plants being corn, squash, and beans.
[08:10] <Springfield> The tall-growing corn stalks would provide support for bean plants to climb up so they wouldn't compete with squash vines for space.
[08:12] <Springfield> The bean would extract nitrogen from the air and convert it into forms that could be absorbed by plant roots, helping to maintain the soil.
[08:13] <Springfield> And the large leaves of the squash plant provided shade for the ground, maintaining soil moisture and preventing weeds from growing.
[08:13] <Springfield> And from them comes THIS.
[08:14] <Springfield> As you can see it's a hearty AND healthy vegetable soup that fits in well with any vegetarian diet.
[08:15] <Springfield> There's no "ONE" recipe for Three Sisters Soup, but plenty of variations. All of them incorporate the main three ingredients (corn, beans,and squash) and can be prepared in any number of ways.
[08:16] <Springfield> The broth can be vegetable or chicken broth, but plain water can be used too.

[08:18] <Springfield> Various spices can be used as well, from basic salt and pepper to cumin, bay leaf, garlic, jalapenos, onions, and chipotle powder.
[08:19] <Springfield> You CAN add meat to it as well. Shredded chicken, sausage, or chorizo works best.
[08:21] <Queen Bonnie> [Chiyoko's] I'll take the chicken variant, then.
[08:21] <Springfield> Cooking is relatively simple, too. As a soup, the process is done mostly through boiling and simmering. Most of the time required is due to preparing the ingredients.

[08:22] <Springfield> Naturally, you have to put in the time to slice up and dice the vegetables, but as you can tell, it's worth it.
