[07:19] <S.A.T. 8> Pizza, or at least to concept of it in the form of baked flatbreads with toppings, has existed for over a millennia.
[07:21] <S.A.T. 8> The first mentions were in Virgil's Aeneid, when Aeneas and his crew were eating in Latium and had "thin wheaten cakes as platters for their meal." They then topped them with herbs and mushrooms and devoured it all, which resulted in Aeneas' son to proclaim "Look! We've even eaten our plates!"
[07:23] <S.A.T. 8> Since then, the early versions of pizza were common food for the working class and travelers, because they were cheap to make and easy to eat.
[07:24] <S.A.T. 8> It was late 18th Century Naples that this really came into popularity and the recipe was "perfected" so to speak.
[07:25] <S.A.T. 8> At the time, Naple's population was growing rapidly and the economy was such that many people were becoming poor. This led to a demand for food that was cheap as anything.
[07:26] <S.A.T. 8> Thus, the more modern incarnation of pizza was born. Street vendors sold them like crazy, creating and cutting tem to meet the budgets and appetites of the customers.
[07:27] <S.A.T. 8> A cheap slice would make a good breakfast, while a big pizza could feed an entire family.
[07:28] <S.A.T. 8> The flatbread part was simple to make, and toppings were easy to find and had plenty of flavor. The simplest and cheapest were topped with nothing more than garlic, lard, and salt.
[07:29] <S.A.T. 8> Other toppings at the time included horse cheese, whitebait, basil, and even tomatoes!
[07:32] <S.A.T. 8> Still, pizza wasn't highly regarded at all internationally. After the unification that changed. When King Umberto and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889 and were sick of crappy French food. They wanted something different and tried the local specialty.
[07:32] <S.A.T. 8> They were served...you guessed it, PIZZA! Three sorts actually.
[07:33] <S.A.T. 8> The third, which was made with tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella, astonished Queen Margherita so much that it became her favorite.
[07:34] <S.A.T. 8> And was christened "pizza margherita" in her honor! Which is where Margherita Pizza got its name from!
[07:35] <S.A.T. 8> It wasn't until World War 2 that pizza, and a lot of other Italian foods, became really popular.
[07:37] <S.A.T. 8> When Allied soldiers invaded in 1943, they were so taken with the pizza they encountered in Campania that they started asking for it wherever they went. Increased tourism after the War accelerated interest.

[08:08] <Springfield> What I'm going to be making this morning is Herb Vegetable Soup. It's relatively simple, don't require any special equipment for cooking, and is likely very good for people with dietary restrictions as the ingredients are almost entirely vegetables and herbs
[08:09] <Springfield> The ingredients for making this are as follows.
[08:10] * Springfield gets the camera to close in a little as she waves her gloved hands over everything.
[08:10] <Springfield> 2 medium onions, chopped.
[08:10] <Springfield> 1 green pepper, chopped fine.
[08:10] <Springfield> 1 cup of chopped celery
[08:11] <Springfield> 1 ripe tomato, peeled and cut into chunks.
[08:11] <Springfield> 1 cup of sliced carrots
[08:11] <Queen Bonnie> [Chiyoko's] One moment, need to get my smartphone or noteblok out.
[08:11] <Springfield> 1 quart of beef broth, although other types of broth can probably be used if you wish.
[08:12] <Springfield> 1 teaspoon of salt
[08:12] * Queen Bonnie [Chiyoko's] starts typing in the ingredients
[08:13] <Springfield> 1/8 teaspoon of pepper. Perhaps more if you want something a little spicier.
[08:13] <Springfield> 1 teaspoon of fresh basil, chopped.
[08:13] <Springfield> 1 teaspoon of fresh oregano, chopped.
[08:13] <Springfield> 1/2 teaspoon of fennel seed, crushed.
[08:15] <Springfield> You'll need a large soup kettle or big thick-bottom saucepan for the next part.
[08:16] <Springfield> Pour in the broth, then add the onions, green pepper, celery, carrots, and tomato. DON'T add the herbs yet. That's later
[08:16] <Springfield> Bring it all to a boil, then turn down the heat and let it all simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Stir occasionally.
[08:17] <Springfield> Add up to a 1/2 cup of water is necessary, but it's not required.
[08:17] <Springfield> ^IF necessary
[08:18] <Springfield> Once the simmering is done, THEN add in all the herbs. Stir them in, then let it all cook for another 10 minutes.
[08:20] <Springfield> And it's ready! I personally recommend serving it hot, especially on cold days, with a side of hot, toasted bread with herb butter.
[08:21] <Queen Bonnie> [Chiyoko's] Hmm-hmm. Sounds easy and delicious at the same time. Our Palace chef would be quite happy abot this kind of de-burdening, after all those compalints of unthankful guests. 🤍

[08:23] <Springfield> This recipe isn't trademarked at all, so feel free to try it out for yourself at home.

[07:35] <Springfield> Good morning, everyone! I'm back again because apparently yesterday's show was quite popular.
[07:37] <Springfield> So for today I'll be showing you how to make an herb sauce that can be used with ANY meat dish. On top of that, the sauce itself is vegetarian in nature, so it can be used by anyone who has a vegetarian diet.
[07:40] <Springfield> The overall level of preparation required is about...medium. Getting the ingredients is easy, but they'll all need to be chopped or crushed.
[07:40] <Springfield> And some cooking time will be needed, so you'll need to keep track of that. With that aside, let's begin.
[07:41] <Springfield> The ingredients are...
[07:41] <Springfield> 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
[07:41] <Springfield> 1 medium onion, chopped
[07:41] <Springfield> 1 clove of garlic, crushed.
[07:41] <Springfield> 2 cups of cooked tomatoes
[07:42] <Springfield> 1/4 cup of tomato puree or paste
[07:42] <Springfield> 1 tablespoon of salt
[07:42] <Springfield> 1/8 teaspoon of pepper
[07:42] <Springfield> 1 teaspoon of sugar
[07:42] <Springfield> 2 tablespoons of fresh basil, chopped.
[07:43] <Springfield> And lastly, ONE BAY LEAF!! Perhaps two!
[07:44] <Springfield> Have your sauce pan ready.
[07:45] <Springfield> Lightly saute the onion and garlic in the olive oil.
[07:45] <Springfield> Then add the tomatoes, tomato puree, salt, pepper, sugar, and bay leaf together and mix it all in.
[07:45] <Springfield> Don't add the basil just yet. That comes later.
[07:46] <Springfield> Cook the mixture for an hour over low heat until the sauce is thick.
[07:46] <Springfield> THEN add the basil in. Mix everything together again.
[07:47] <Springfield> Once you've added the basil, you're pretty much done. The sauce is ready to use on anything you'd like.
[07:48] <Springfield> This particular recipe is meant to be used with meatloaf, but I don't see why it can't be used on any meat dish. Beef, lamb, venison, fish, foul, etc.
[07:49] <Springfield> A good herb sauce goes well with just about anything.

[07:24] <Springfield> But let's get started with today's breakfast preparation! This is a recipe I'm certain most of you have never heard of before, as it's an old one from the 19th and early 20th Centuries.

[07:26] <Springfield> This one is called Mormon Johnnycake.

[07:27] <Springfield> Your main tools for this are a standard oven and a cast-iron skillet. You might also be able to use a regular skillet, but let's stick with the classic tools for now.
[07:27] <Springfield> Because a good cast-iron skillet, properly cared for and maintained, can last generations.
[07:28] <Springfield> The ingredients are as follows...
[07:28] <Springfield> 2 cups of yellow cornmeal
[07:28] <Springfield> 2 cups of buttermilk
[07:28] <Springfield> 1/2 cup of flour
[07:28] <Springfield> 1 teaspoon of baking soda
[07:28] <Springfield> 1 teaspoon of salt.
[07:29] <Springfield> Preheat your oven to 425 degrees
[07:29] <Springfield> Combine your dry ingredients together in a bowl. That's the cornmeal, flour, salt, and baking soda.
[07:30] <Springfield> THEN add the buttermilk. Mix it all together thoroughly.
[07:30] <Springfield> Butter up your cast-iron skillet. Yes, INSERT OBLIGATORY JOKES. :P
[07:31] <Springfield> Then pour in the mixed ingredients. Make sure there aren't any dry pockets.
[07:37] <Springfield> Finally, put the whole thing in the over and bake for 20 minutes.

[07:40] <Springfield> When it's done, it should come out like this.




[07:42] <Springfield> Other recipes include additional sweeteners like honey or molasses. Which is perfectly fine.
