[20:11] * Franziska von Karma takes a moment to adjust her organizer, having eschewed a tablet for an old-fashioned set of manila envelopes. She takes a moment to take in the room, then clears her throat and begins.
[20:11] <Franziska von Karma> Your honor, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the Prosecution comes before you to ask for the immediate suspension of the personal timeline of the Defendant, Hazenine of Gallifrey—also known as "Hazel Ninegate", with her personal history and personality from the point of judgment onwards to be altered into that of a being of heroic virtue dedicated to the preservation and protection of life on the planet Earth.
[20:12] * Franziska von Karma exhales slowly.
[20:12] <Franziska von Karma> The standard of proof to support such a verdict is a grave one-namely, "Would the Universe be better off without the Defendant in it?" It is a deceptively simple question, as everyone has their contribution to make to the infinitely complex web of relationships that defines the structure of the universe as we know it. Even a murderer can spawn a hero-for example the man who killed the parents of the Batman, giving rise to one of history’s greatest legendary heroes. Even a murderess like Hazel has done some good in causing others to forge relationships and alliances against her; but there comes a point when the good that evil does is outweighed by the chaos it wreaks, and it is the Prosecution’s contention that we are at that point now.
[20:13] * Franziska von Karma gets out from behind the podium, and gestures broadly.
[20:13] <Franziska von Karma> The Prosecution will show that the Defendant is a dangerous psychopath with no respect for non-Time Lord life; that the Defendant is committing ever-greater crimes with ever-greater repercussions for the universe that show no signs of abating; that despite her assertions that she is needed to "test", or "challenge" Humanity, her role as such a challenger is neither unique nor required; and that for these reasons, the Universe will be better off without her personal future in it. We seek to preserve what good the Defendant has indirectly done in the past by not removing her from Time completely, but only from this point onward so as to stop what we fear may well be the destruction of reality itself.
[20:13] * Franziska von Karma gets back behind the podium and opens a folder, turning a page.
[20:13] <Franziska von Karma> First, we examine the Defendant herself. To understand what kind of a person the Defendant is, we must go back to the first time she appeared on the stage. Ninegate made her criminal debut in January of 2010, instituting what she called "the Nonary game", using Time Lord technology to ensnare individuals and place them in life-threatening situations in order to "test" the worthiness of Humanity. When pressed, she coldly murdered one mister Shinozaki, decapitating him and sending his head back to Sailor Neggerra. She indirectly caused the deaths of 5 others. (Prosecution's Exhibit 2). Sometime later, she tricked a group of refugees from an alien planet into accepting her offer of protection, the abused their trust and ruthlessly converted them into Cybermen (Prosecution's Exhibit 3), whom she later used to convert the rest of their people, who were seeking shelter on Papaya Island (Prosecution's Exhibit 10).
[20:14] * Franziska von Karma shrugs a bit. "At first, these acts of the Defendant's were relatively small (on a universal scale)-no different than those of any run-of-the-mill murderer that could be easily handled by a standard justice system. But then things changed, and a pattern of escalation began. "
[20:14] <Franziska von Karma> Violently opposed to the miscegenation demonstrated by Time Lord Xadium's engagement to the human Gemini Sunrise, the Defendant hastily, and with no preparation other than the desire to harm, instituted a "Nonary Game II" similar to her first, and then decided to keep Xadium too busy to get married by attacking other planets in the cosmos-- starting coups on many, then attacking Usarius, Planet 14, and the Burning Empire (Prosecution's Exhibit 5) where she killed millions, nearly rendering one planet lifeless (Prosecution's Exhibit 19).

[20:15] <Franziska von Karma> But this was but prelude to what was to come. In October of 2012, showing great disregard for the structure of time and space (Prosecution's Exhibit 19), and for the lives of billions, she travelled to the World of Veridian IV, taking the lives of 99.8% of the population (Prosecution's Exhibit 9) and "repurposing them"-3.6 billion lives, in fact (Prosecution's Exhibit 16)-- in order to break a "Time Lock" around her home planet of Gallifrey, restoring the planet to the Time-Space Continuum (Prosecution's Exhibit 9).

Just one month prior to her massacre of billions in October, she confided in the Time Lord Thrash that she had already gone too far. The testimony is too damning to simply paraphrase, so I present an excerpt of Prosecution's Exhibit 15 to the court:

[20:19] <Franziska von Karma> "Those ants" the Defendant refers to are humans and other non-Time Lords in the universe. And she was a woman of her word. Even after saving her home planet, Ninegate did not stop her heinous activities, brutally murdering animals and babies in order to attempt to coerce the Magistra into doing her bidding (Prosecution's Exhibit 11), and coldly noting that she had prearranged the deaths of 891 other people in case her demands were not met, proudly stating that she had arranged for "99 days of death wherein I don't have to move a muscle." (Prosecution's Exhibit 17).
[20:19] * Franziska von Karma exhales slowly.
[20:19] <Franziska von Karma> Over time, Ninegate has developed a god complex, declaring in her own words that she is "the highest authority" who can define what is and what is not ethical (Prosecution's Exhibit 13), and asserts that she will "enforce her will" upon humanity (Prosecution's Exhibit 14). To her mind, she is merely bringing "her law" to the humans, "breaking a few eggs" in the process. (Prosecution's Exhibit 18).
[20:20] <Franziska von Karma> But this is not my layman's diagnosis. As testimony from Doctor Raihosha in regard to her mental state in Prosecution's Exhibit 21 demonstrates, the Defendant is caught in a psychopathic, messianic zeal wherein she sees herself as the only one who can and will act to do what is necessary for the universe-and the lives of those she deems unimportant-that is to say, the lives of non-Time Lords-become mere fodder for her grand designs. Moreover, according to both Raihosha's testimony and the record as I have laid out to the court previously, her degenerate pattern has only gotten worse with time, following, as Doctor Raihosha put it, "a similar path of development as can be seen in Serial Killers." I present the relevant testimony from Exhibit 21 to the court:

[20:20] <Franziska von Karma> /flash [20:56] <Raihosha> She started here with a small nonary game, then she ramped it up and made some mistakes in her second outing... but she went on to sowing death on a planetary scale... given her current pattern, eventually she will flout even the laws concerning unmaking time itself.

[20:21] <Franziska von Karma> What neither I nor Doctor Raihosha knew at the time I took that testimony was that the Defendant had already escalated things to that point, threatening the structure of reality itself. Recently acquired testimony from the Black Guardian-- one of the higher beings that regulates the structure of the Cosmos- has revealed that on September 21st, 2012, the Defendant attacked him and seized for herself a significant portion of his power, using it to damage no less than three fixed points in time in order to break the Time Lock around Gallifrey, momentarily causing time itself to *cease to exist* and "nearly eras[ing] all of creation" (Prosecution's Exhibit 26). The breaking of these fixed points is a reckless act all sane Time Lords know to avoid precisely because of the damage it can do to all of creation (Prosecution's Exhibit 19), yet she wilfully shattered them anyway in her mad quest for victory.
[20:21] * Franziska von Karma again lets that sink in.
[20:22] <Franziska von Karma> Fortunately for all of us standing here today, the Black Guardian was barely able to rally forces to defeat her and reclaim his power, and the universe was put back together with the Time Lock, and everything was mostly restored, albeit with some telltale signs that something odd had happened. But these strokes of luck that enable us to survive by the skin of our teeth are not enough to rely on. The Defendant is tenacious and unwavering in her fixations. As was noted previously, even though she suffered a defeat on September 21st, her ambition continued on, and she achieved the breaking of the Time Lock in October 2012. It was just fortunate for us that she was able to do so without shattering reality itself-though the Black Guardian's testimony has shown she would not cared had she done so.
[20:22] * Franziska von Karma now presses forward faster, not allowing time for reflection.
[20:22] <Franziska von Karma> No doubt, being a Time Lord, the Defendant will gleefully point out that her activities are somehow critical to the future fabric of the universe as a whole, and that as such, she should be left to her own devices in order to continue honing and shaping its structure. Disregarding for the moment that her arbitrary and capricious actions are in all probability more likely to destroy that future tapestry if she is left unchecked, it is the Prosecution's stance that the pressures the Defendant applies to the cosmos are not needed to ensure its continued evolution and progression. There are already-or will be-- numerous threats (albeit not quite so dangerously existential to the cosmos as a whole) that can serve this purpose.
[20:23] <Franziska von Karma> I have deposed a future version of Raihosha, who is from four thousand years in the future, from one of our possible futures-more specifically, the one he is reasonably certain was our particular future-and in Prosecution's Exhibit 24, he has testified that mankind will face many, many dangers from "multiple worlds of origin", often facing multiple adversaries at a single time, to the point where no one individual is necessary to push humanity forward through direct challenge.
[20:23] * Franziska von Karma pauses for a moment.
[20:23] <Franziska von Karma> Before I relate this testimony, I will remind the court and all spectators present, as well as all jurors that the information I am about to present must remain under confidential seal and cannot be disseminated outside these proceedings under penalty of Prosecution under the Shadow Proclamation's Temporal Information non-Proliferation Act.
[20:23] *** The screen wavers and flickers... those outside of court / the Hotel in time zones too early for the things related have lost their feed, and will only regrain it when the sensitive testimony is over.
[20:24] * Franziska von Karma recites the next names solemnly.
[20:24] <Franziska von Karma> Borg. Tairon. Klingon. K'zin. Daleks. Cybermen. Names that mean nothing to us now, but according to Mister Raihosha, in the centuries and millennia to come, they will be some of the greatest threats humanity will have faced. Beings who will provide direct and dire threats to humanity that they will rally to overcome.
[20:24] <Franziska von Karma> And there are other threats, described by other sources. In fact, in the course of our investigation, the Prosecution has identified several individuals from the future of man-both in this timeline and alternates-that have tested the species and pushed them forward-and sometimes, to the breaking point.
[20:24] <Franziska von Karma> As referenced in Prosecution Exhibit 22, the Time Lord Thrash identified the 51st century Supreme Alliance "minster of justice", Magnus Greel, who abused his position, killing 100,000 people, aiding in the assassination of the commissioner of the Icelandic Alliance, almost starting World War 6. In the aftermath of the conflict, the world became more peaceful, taking the steps needed to become the third Unified Earth. In Prosecution Exhibit 23, we have the deposition of Arasutujou, regarding a man named Horus Lupercal, who in a 31st Millennium of mankind, led an uprising against the emperor of man, annihilating the population of planet Istvaan-4, spreading terror across roughly one million star systems, and causing widespread damage to the planets of the Solar system, causing humanity to lose access to much of its technology. He turned the egalitarian, secular human society into an, intolerant, xenophobic nightmare. And he was just a human. One human. Terrorizing millions of systems.
[20:25] * Franziska von Karma exhales for a moment, letting the gravity of that sink in.
[20:25] <Eitak_Razal> I wish I coulda got her one more bit of testimony....
[20:25] <Franziska von Karma> But even with his evil, the Universe still remained. It could still grow, no matter how heinous his depredations. He could not undo the universe. But our Defendant can. In his recollections, Future Raihosha noted that while he could think of a few individuals who held the power to unmake the universe, they were not likely to ever use that power. Significantly, he noted two races that could, in theory, have the power to unmake the universe- "The Daleks or the Time Lords."

[20:25] <Franziska von Karma> Currently, the Defendant, through her Time Lord technology, has the power to physically displace entire civilizations, destroy galaxies, and create stellar explosions (Supernovas) on a large scale. (Prosecution's Exhibit 20). She has not shied away from using her power, wielding it once against the Black Guardian, and once again when she played God a second time with the Lives of those on Veridian IV.
[20:26] <Franziska von Karma> he Defendant is capable of manifesting anywhere in time and space, well beyond our ability to see coming until it is too late. In fact, she even planted a gravity bomb near the center of the Earth in the 5th century, set to go off in 2012 (Prosecution's Exhibit 1)- but only her own admission of this fact in an attempt to blackmail Doctor Xadium to turn himself over to her led to its defusal.
[20:26] * Franziska von Karma slams her hands down on the podium, staring straight into the jury's eyes.
[20:26] <Franziska von Karma> The Defendant is one of the rare few who could unmake everything, and one of the rarer few still who obviously have no qualms in doing so, killing babies or rending time in twain to answer her merest whims. For these reasons, she must be stopped, and now.

[20:30] <Yaijinden> It's a cheap sentiment, but it's also very true. No action is taken in isolation, no deed is done without a thousand cascading effects. What is thought to be good can in time become evil; what was thought to be horrible can in time prove to be the least of a dozen possible troubles.
[20:30] <Yaijinden> A child is sent to a far-off world by his elders to slay every living creature on the planet for their ease, profit, and convenience. He grows up to be one of Earth's mightiest defenders, drawing on tenacity and experience to surge past his limits and defend the weak against those who would terrify, enslave, or destroy them.

[20:31] <Yaijinden> History may be written by the victors, but causality does not care why any of us do anything. Causality only cares about who, what, where, when, and how. Every action has ramifications none of us expect, both for good and for ill. Hazel Ninegate is no exception. She is a visionary, a zealot, and believes that her vision justifies whatever plans she makes, but for all her blindness she is an important cog-- for now-- in the healthy functioning of the galaxy.
[20:31] <Yaijinden> In her current place, at this current moment, Hazenine contributes greatly to the cosmos in ways she had never considered. Yes, she is a murderous crazy person, but it is short-sighted to remove her hastily, without preparing to deal with the fallout of a sudden cataclysmic disappearance. She is relevant, she is connected. She is not what she thinks she is; she is what she does, and ultimately, that is the relevant facet of her existence.
[20:32] <Yaijinden> There are two great functions that Hazel Ninegate serves by her existence. One is as a villain, a trial and a consequence, a big bright broadcasted threat by which those she opposes can learn to surmount and defeat the legacies of ancient evil. The second, and perhaps more relevant, is that for all the danger she poses to Earth, she has also become a crucial stabilizing force against the much greater peril of her people.
[20:32] <Yaijinden> While the work of the galaxy is done by the many, it is the exceptional few that determine its course. It was not an army or a species that defeated Frieza, or Sailor Galaxia-- it was two very different people whose hearts and minds set them in opposition to megalomaniacal tyrants. The exceptional few are produced by a combination of two things: chance, and adversity.
[20:32] <Yaijinden> Only those who are tried know what they are capable of; only those who are in the right place at the right time can be tried. They serve as champions for their chosen people, a tradition as old as written stories go. They go into the dark places, they brave the fire, they obtain the secret of fire, the elixir of life, the knowledge of how to defend themselves from wicked creatures.
[20:32] <Yaijinden> Earth and its inhabitants are no stranger to supernatural perils. Horrors here are a dime a dozen, each driven by their own needs. Hazel, however, is a different threat: an ontological rather than an existential danger, grounded in hypertech, and headed by a mortal, if very long-lived individual.
[20:32] <Yaijinden> In overcoming her, Earth's finest will learn how to outthink someone better armed and armored than they-- lessons they can make use of to head off the next great threat that comes from that direction. Another inevitable danger, not likely to be so kind as to broadcast her intentions and her origin and her access.
[20:33] <Yaijinden> Are there people who will suffer if she remains free? Yes. There are always people who suffer, and there will always be people who suffer-- until such a time as the galaxy thinks with one mind and exists with one heart, and so long as even one ego in the universe persists that time shall not come. But in this imperfect universe, we must make do with what we have, limit the damage we do and staunch the blood as we can, and keep things from toppling further into imbalance, or an even worse homeostasis...
[20:33] <Yaijinden> ...such as they would on Gallifrey if she were removed as a meaningful political player.
[20:33] <Yaijinden> As in engineering, if for different reasons, the most stable social power structure is a triangle. One side becomes dominant, the other two strike out to break them down. When all three sides are irreconcilable, there's no room for alliances, no room for convenient backroom politicking to push a deal through.
[20:34] <Yaijinden> It is a point of sadness that the weakest leg of the triangle in the Time Lord Omega is also the one most conducive to galactic harmony, and that the two ascendant-- the first among not-so-equals Rassilon, and Hazel Ninegate through her proxy the Master-- have an agenda involving the express and explicit and militant dominance of their people.
[20:34] <Yaijinden> Omega is an outsider, an exile, and the black horse in this race. Hazel is a war hero, as is Rassilon-- perhaps justly so, given how long they staved off annhilation for the whole of their people-- and if Hazel is removed from the equation, Rassilon -will- assume the vacancy. The Master is canny, but not well-armed enough to fight off Rassilon himself; hell, he may even sign on to the opposition when he realizes his meal ticket is gone.
[20:34] <Yaijinden> This leaves an ascendant Rassilon in charge of a Gallifrey on a war footing and an aggressive position towards the rest of the galaxy at large... and every reason to suspect a galaxy that would pass judgement and suborn his greatest enemy, every reason to make a martyr out of her and launch a punitive crusade in her name against a galaxy that has turned its back on the Time Lords.
[20:35] <Yaijinden> It's what I'd do in his place.
[20:35] <Yaijinden> Each moment that Hazel spends with her eyes on Earth and humanity is a moment she is not fighting to promote her pawn's dominance on Gallifrey. A year ago, six months ago, I would not have taken this case. But what transpired on September 21st last year has made things much more complicated. The Prosecution asserts that things would be better off without Hazel, and to a measure I agree with her. She's a terrible person.
[20:35] <Yaijinden> But-- crucially, but-- it's not just about Earth anymore. It's about the galaxy as a whole, and what removing her by fiat would do to what remains of it.

[23:08] <Franziska von Karma> The Defendant is an unstable, amoral, escalating psychopath with incredible power, and her utter contempt for other forms of life-not to mention the structural integrity of creation-make her far more than a mere murderess or super-criminal; they make her an immediate, grave, and real threat to the existence of creation as a whole.
[23:08] * Franziska von Karma adopts a skeptical expression, becoming more animated as she paces slightly.
[23:08] <Franziska von Karma> The Defense may claim The Defendant is just a mechanism akin to a "teacher", testing humanity and the cosmos and shaping it through crisis...
[23:08] <Franziska von Karma> But a teacher's overriding goal is to enable their students to gain the skills and discipline necessary to become masters themselves-not to denigrate, debase and utterly destroy their pupils so they can never outshine their tutor! Hazel would never allow Earth to sutrpass Gallifrey! That is was fuels her rage in the first place!
[23:09] * Franziska von Karma continues forcefully.
[23:09] <Franziska von Karma> And this is where the Defendant has failed. If she ever was a teacher, she has certainly lost her way, allowing jealousy, racism and arrogance to turn her into nothing more than a base, vengeful murderess. Any beneficial lessons she may have imparted or been able to impart, have now been blotted away by the sea of blood she has left in her wake, and the maddening fear of what yet might come to pass. Being a "pupil" of hers now is akin to sitting on death row, watching the executioners' ever-shifting moods, waiting for her final, fatal blow to strike!
[23:09] * Franziska von Karma makes an almost pleading gesture towards the judge and jury.
[23:09] <Franziska von Karma> This is the sort of terror that the universe cannot abide; the last power-mad Time Lord who ravaged worlds-- Morbius-- was sentenced to complete and utter bodily dissolution. By comparison, what the Prosecution asks for is a mercy. The universe stands on a constant precipice of destruction as long as The Defendant is allowed to continue as she is.
[23:09] <Franziska von Karma> We have shown evidence that the Defendant-and her brand of testing-- is neither unique, nor of such a special significance to the future of humanity or the cosmos that they are irreplaceable. Gallifrey and the threat of its retaliation if you decide in the Prosecution's favor is a smokescreen.
[23:10] <Franziska von Karma> Lest we forget, the battle on Gallifrey cuts three ways-- the Master / Hazel vs Rassilon and Omega. Removing the defendant still leaves Omega to deal with Rassilon... as well as the _rest of Gallifrey_. The Time Lords will still be too busy fighting each other in the aftermath of the verdict; it will not be too late to intervene there via our other allies.
[23:10] <Franziska von Karma> The Defense attempts to maintain that without the Defendant holding Rassilon in check, he will sweep forth and wreak vengenance on the universe. But he has also let slip the fact that the Time Lords took care of him on their own. They did so once, when he was at the height of his power, and they can do it again.
[23:10] <Franziska von Karma> The defense says "But-- crucially, but-- it's not just about Earth anymore. It's about the galaxy as a whole, and what removing her by fiat would do to what remains of it." And The prosecution agrees. Removing her from the future mix of events will make it safer. It will not in any way impede the ability of the human race to move forward through tests of crisis and adversity. It will free the universe from at least one threat of spurious annihilation. The universe will be made better off without her.
[23:11] <Franziska von Karma> As I said before, the defense has claimed "In overcoming her, Earth's finest will learn how to outthink someone better armed and armored than they." This is when we do that. Not later. Right now. With your verdict, we can eliminate her threat forever AND give Earth an even greater hero to help it along its journey.
[23:11] * Franziska von Karma stares at the judge and the jury, meetign each one's gaze firmly.
[23:12] <Franziska von Karma> We have prepared the intstrument of our victory. We are prepared to meet the final exam, and pass it . But for that, we need your help. Allow humanity to grow past its tyrannical mentor. We ask that relief be granted and sentence carried out immediately thereafter. Thank you.

[23:15] <Aes> The relief requested, as opposed to previous judgement requests, is for a timeline rewritten as a hero. Given her tendencies currently, is there any ability to predict what sort of hero she is likely to be?
[23:16] <Franziska von Karma> Bear in mind it will be a complete rewrite at the discretion of the one who does the rewriting; her prior tendencies will have no bearing at all, which is rather the point of the exercise.
[23:17] <Franziska von Karma> The idea is to completely sever the chain of her progression. She will literally e a new being.
[23:17] <Franziska von Karma> This preserves the impact she has had in the past and any knock-on effects in the future and does not destabilize the timeline.
[23:17] <Aes> I see. So the possibility of a situation similar to the late Mr. Suthers is of no bearing here?
[23:18] <Franziska von Karma> Correct.
[23:18] <Franziska von Karma> We have secured the services of Vainamoinen to effect sentence.

[23:28] * Hazel Ninegate is calm.
[23:28] * Yaijinden sweeps an arm back to his client
[23:28] <Yaijinden> Genteelfolk of the jury, the prosecution has argued exquisitely that Hazel Ninegate is a dangerous person. It would be a disservice to the lives she has taken, and will almost certainly take in the future, if I were to gloss over their deaths as mere statistics-- as functionally and meaningfully identical to the millions of bacteria slain when someone washes their hands with antibacterial soap.
[23:29] <Yaijinden> Regretfully, though, we are not here to argue whether or not she is a dangerous person: we are here to argue whether or not the cosmos is better off without her-- and to that end, we must examine what we do in the very act of putting her on trial with the consequences designed for her.
[23:30] <Yaijinden> There is no question that Hazel is more than a smidge mad. You have to be at least a bit mad to be a crusader, and Hazel is nothing if not a crusader for her cause. And, to be sure, she's done some positive good on the side: Gallifrey, the home of the Time Lords, has once again entered causal space. Billions of lives have been relieved of the threat of death. The Time Lords are now free to go about their business as a stabilizing galactic power.
[23:30] <Yaijinden> If that is in fact going to be their business when they go about it.
[23:31] <Yaijinden> Until the Time War began, the Time Lords thought their hands clean, particularly since the defeat of Morbius-- the last President who esposed conquering visions. The Time Lords generally suppose themselves to be above the conflicts of "ephemerals," even if they don't share the defendant's extremity of viewpoint. But when push comes to shove-- when threat comes to them-- Hazel is hardly from the only Time Lord who is willing to write people off who do not obey her.
[23:31] <Yaijinden> The Prosecution claims that retribution from Gallifrey is a smokescreen, but is not Gallifrey once again part of the universe?
[23:31] <Yaijinden> The Doctor did not engage the Time Lock that sealed Gallifrey away because to do otherwise would be to watch his people die off. The Doctor engaged the Time Lock because his OWN people were the threat to the cosmos. Not the Daleks, not their allies: it was the Time Lords, arrogant and ensconced in their means and methodology, who decided that their own survival was paramount over that of all of Creation.
[23:32] <Yaijinden> What has Hazenine done that her elders have not done already, and with greater callousness? With less sense of obligation to those who fall? With less sense of duty to her people? With Hazenine, we can at least be assured that she will not cross her sense of self-- we can be assured that she has a vision, and that she will not betray that vision. In this, she is reliable; she knows that nothing she does matters if there is no cosmos to bear witness to the glory she imagines.
[23:32] <Yaijinden> This is predictable. She will play according to her type, possessed of her twisted sense of honor and a penchant for occasional overcommittment; for all the tricks she has, she will be defeated in time-- and by staving her off long enough for her peers to realize what they're harboring, Earth's best will learn how to defeat someone who has access to her technological reach. In this, in the ecological culmination of a tyrant's end, she can serve as an example of what happens to those who think themselves above compassion for other thinking creatures.
[23:33] <Yaijinden> Hazenine styles herself a teacher and a cruel instructor. To a certain degree, she is right-- but only inasmuch as she is a teacher the same way a hurricane, an earthquake, or a firestorm are teachers. For those whom she trods on, she is a lesson in suffering. For those who work to thwart her, she is a lesson in how to overcome those like her. For those whom she claims to represent, she is a lesson in the price of hubris... and the price of staying silent, of letting the politics of expedience and efficiency guide your every move.
[23:34] <Yaijinden> Could the burden on Earth be eased by making Hazenine a stalwart defender of this planet and its inhabitants? Perhaps, yes. But right now, Hazel serves a much greater purpose as an antagonist: her destructive whims, her malice, her hate and her anger, are all serving to represent the Time Lords, the Order of Rassilon, and Gallifrey as the ivory tower of short-minded, bureaucratic, mob-ruled thugs that they have let themselves fall into being.
[23:34] <Yaijinden> As long as she is a player in the game, she teaches her enemies how to fight people precisely like her; as long as she is a player in the game, she acts as a counter to the murderous, evangelical vision of every other who would work their own design in her sphere.
[23:34] <Yaijinden> Yes, Rassilon was defeated by his own people-- but by a people at their peak, at the height of their power. Not by a population torn and weary and embittered from a thousand years of war, not a population who seriously considered obliterating the universe rather than perish.
[23:35] <Yaijinden> In a culture as old as this, with a population as long-lived as this, who has seen the first reminder of their very mortality for the first time in thousands of years, that kind of trauma is the sort that is quick to reconstrue any insult as a mortal threat and, every threat as an existential danger.
[23:35] <Yaijinden> I have every reason to believe that Gallifrey is capable of dealing with its own who have stepped over the line; the recent trial and punishment of the traitor Vaxilan is evidence enough of this. They simply need the will to do so, and if they have to date lacked that will, let them sit and consider what they have heard over the course of this case about their so-called "heroes."
[23:35] <Yaijinden> There's a saying: you either die a hero's death, or you live long enough to become the villain of the next story. Hazel herself passed that threshold years back. That time has come once again for the Time Lords. Let Hazenine pass through this trial unmarked. Let her very existence and the revelations of her deeds be the final straw that gives pause to her people and shocks them from their obedience to petty politick.
[23:36] <Yaijinden> Allow them the chance to see this forking of the road and choose the destiny they wish to work towards: the path of harmony, where the Time Lords return to being the snooty but otherwise good-natured upper crust of the galactic community... or the path of the warlord, with its short-lived illusions of godhood and the inevitable defeat for anything that has turned possessive eyes towards this little arm of Mutter's Spiral.
[23:36] <Yaijinden> The path of Frieza.
[23:36] <Yaijinden> The path of Sailor Galaxia.
[23:36] <Yaijinden> The path of the Dalek.
[23:36] <Yaijinden> Every action has ramifications. Let her release be the one that condemns her madness to the justice of her own, and allows a culture to redeem itself.

[15:10] *** The garbage contains cans and toilet paper rolls and paper wrappings and some empty oxygen canisters. Med-packs that have been totally used are also discarded there.
